This
is the group's second anthology.
Introduction
by Andrew Shephard
The Common Thread. Strange name for a writing group, isn't it? But believe me, though the Bronte sisters may have had to hide their novels under their needlework, this is certainly not the case with us! It's simply that we're such a motley crew, brought together each week by our mutual passion for the written word. This close-knit little group (oh stop it, of course I didn't mean it!) comprises people hailing from South Africa, New Zealand, America, Britain and of course, Australia. Members range from twenty-somethings to ... well, you get the idea. All with very different lives beyond our Thursday night sessions. But this eclectic mix is precisely what makes us such a fun group. And indeed it makes this anthology such an interesting read.
Our misleading moniker holds yet further traps. It might be fair to assume with a name such as ours, that there would be a common theme running through these pages. Don't look for it: it's not there! Just like the group they're born of, the hallmark of the following pieces is their variety. Each author displays a unique style, and subjects range from monster trucks to the finer points of ballet etiquette.
You may also find some interesting variations in language. In compiling this anthology, the editor has chosen to retain individual writers' mannerisms, so don't be surprised to see words spelt in both Australian and American fashion, or references to foreign cultures and colloquialisms. We felt that homogenising the individuality of the authors that make up the Common Thread would take away from the very thing that defines us.
So fair warning -- brace yourselves for a bumpy ride. If you were intending to read about quilting, spinning jennies or sewing by the hearth, I'm afraid it would be best to ever-so-surreptitiously return the book to the shelf. (No one need know!) The Common Thread Anthology 2005 is something altogether different. From verse that sparkles with frivolity, to the most heart-rending of short stories, this collection will sweep you through a kaleidoscope of emotions.
We certainly hope you enjoy it.
