In
a letter to Pippa dated 14th October, 2002, he said:
"I'm not frightened about the controversy of the book... [T]here
are important questions about this case that have not been answered.
I too believe that Andrew, whom I do not know, is innocent. But I also
believe that there's something he knows that we don't know. And I don't
know why I feel that way."
At
the launch, Alan Jones praised Pippa for her thorough and unbiased treatment
of the subject.
He
added that while no one wanted a guilty man to go free it was just as
unthinkable for an innocent man to be jailed for a crime he did not
commit. He referred to the Lindy Chamberlain case, and reminded his
audience that if we still had a death sentence in Australia, then Lindy,
who was innocent of the murder of her baby Azaria, would be dead.
He
felt Doubt & Conviction was well-titled and easy to read. He commented
on Pippa's skill in telling the story which, despite its complexity,
avoids burdening the reader with heavy legalese and is simply told.
